Lesson Learned

Public transportation and I have been in a bit of a fight lately... and it plays dirty. For the third time this week I have been cursing WMATA (and my own stupidity.) Let's just say that I got an unintentional tour of Christmas lights from around the region when I got on the wrong bus on Monday... and was asked if I was in high school... and yesterday I had a 20 minute wait for the bus.

But at least there was a bus.

The next time you find yourself getting off work mid-day, don't head to the Pentagon station to catch your 29G home- because there will be no 29G. They only run after 4. This I did not know. Not to worry, being the resourceful girl that I am, I got back on the train, rode to another stop and successfully caught another bus route home. One and a half hours later.

When we finally did get to my stop, I had the snow to contend with. With less-than-snow-appropriate shoes. Cute tweed-fabric flats, to be specific. Don't ask me what I was thinking. So, anyway, I had to wade through the snow about a mile home. It honestly was like I wasn't wearing shoes at all, that cold. Maybe I am just a big Californian baby, but that was not fun!

Anyway, I eventually made it home. But let me ask you this- what's the point of taking off at 1:45 if you don't even get home until 3? Jeeze Louise this city has some traffic (and snow) issues.

In other news: I am being stalked by telemarketers. FIFTEEN in a two-day period. And they aren't even asking for my name. Did somebody sign up my phone number to sabotage me? So many questions! Aaagh!

In other, other news: I'm going (going) back (back) to Cali (Cali)! Hooray! Metro, you may have won the battle, but we shall meet again.

The First Snow, The First Post

I'm a California girl in Alexandria, VA.

Six months ago, I was hanging out here:

Now, when I look out of my apartment's window, I see this:

Two feet of powdery goodness- the leftovers from Snowcopalypse '09, what I have been told was one of the worst blizzards to hit D.C. in all of its years. And lucky for me, I made it here just in time to experience it.

I initially set up this blog months ago to share thoughts about the transition from the laid-back left coast to D.C. life... but... I just never could seem to sit down and get started. Getting this blog off the ground seems like a good new year's resolution- so sit tight as I document the adventures (and misadventures) of a twenty-something Californian in the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.

Although I miss many things about California- including Dutch Bros coffee, semi-polite drivers, and my golden retriever, Trevor- the Golden State never was able serve up a white Christmas for me...so thanks, Virginia.

I'm off to make a snowman in my patio!
